Gladiator

by Philip Wylie

I've been wanting to read this, the supposed inspiration for Superman, ever since Roy Thomas adapted it for his Young All-Stars comic. I finally lucked out and came across a copy at the Library sale. Gladiator is about Hugo Danner, a man born in the 1890s with strength and stamina far beyond that of a normal human. Unlike the Man of Steel, Hugo doesn't don a colorful costume and spend his time doing good works. Instead he tries to hide his abilities and find a purpose in life among those who would fear them. It's not great literature, nor even exceptional science fiction. But the story was readable and I did enjoy the nostalgia value of the work.

Check it out. (I should set that in a comic book font.)
