Who Would Buy This?

by Mark Pahlow

This is the story of the Archie McPhee company, located in beautiful Seattle, Washington. ... Okay, I suppose technically only the first eight pages are the Archie McPhee story. The other 170 are one or two page illustrations/descriptions of various memorable products that the company has carried over the years. It's amusing, in an oddball sort of way--though I would think the catalog itself might offer a bit more entertainment.

Wonderful waiting room material!

The Time Traveler's Wife

by Audrey Niffenegger

It's a national bestseller, a major motion picture, and it involves time travel. How could I not read this book? Anyway, it is a good read. It's the tale of Henry DeTamble, a man who accidently travels through time. He has no control over it. He simply disappears from the present and appears somewhen in the past or future. Unfortunately he can't take anything with him, so his spends a lot of time rustling up something to wear. While he can't control the time and place of his destinations, he usually appears in places connected with his life. Because of this, he first meets his wife, Clare, in the past when she's six years old. The book is the tale of their life together, told from their mixed perspective. It's an interesting style. I'm tempted to re-read the book following both Henry and Clare's timelines, but that, of course, would take a lot of work on my part, to unravel the plot that Ms. Niffenegger wove together. Still, it's on my shelf should I ever want to try.
____________
Oh, one more note: Ms. Niffenegger is quite guilty of indulging in scenery porn. The book is chock full of references to the greater Chicago area. You'd think it would be another reason for me to love the book, right? Well, actually, Ms. Niffenegger seems to run in quite a different social circle than I. She didn't mention Portillo's once.

The Ultimates 3

by Jeph Loeb, Joe Madureira and Christian Lightner

Too much death, cheesecake and neurotic "good guys". A fine example of why I'm not as much of a comics fan as I used to be.

Waiting room material if there's nothing else to read.

Excelsior!

by Stan Lee and George Mair

The semi-autobiography of Stan Lee--a light hearted bit of waiting room material. I found it most interesting when he talked about his work with Marvel Comics in the early sixties, but ol' Stan was entertaining all the way through.

Fool Moon

by Jim Butcher

As I read this book instead of The Grapes of Wrath, it occurred to me that The Dresden Files are literary potato chips. I just want to keep reading more and more and it spoils my appetite for more wholesome literature. Anyway, Fool Moon is the second book of this series about a wizard-detective. I have to admit, I enjoyed it more than the original. There's a rash of grisly murders in Chicagoland and Harry Dresden finds out about it belatedly. After the events of Storm Front, Harry's relationship with the Chicago Police Department's Special Investigations unit has cooled somewhat. It's only after the cops have been stymied for a couple months that Lt. Murphy finally seeks his aid. The mystery this time, in case you haven't guessed from the title, is werewolves. It was an entertaining read, though I think Mr. Butcher went a bit overboard in trying to include every werewolf legend he could find.

I put on my shelf anyway.
