The Case of the Haunted Husband
This Perry Mason mystery begins with a young woman, Stephane Claire, hitchhiking from San Francisco to Los Angeles. (This was 1941--people did that back then.) She accepts a ride with a driver who is a little too drunk and a little too amorous. They get into a terrible accident and when Stephane wakes up, she discovers that the gent has vanished without a trace and that she is being accused of causing the accident and the death of one of the other motorists. The story grows more complex as she is also accused of stealing the car, which belongs to a second man, a powerful Hollywood producer. Perry takes on the case, intending to see justice done. There follows a murder or two, a woman looking for her missing husband, and even some cooperation with Lt. Tragg. All in all it makes for some twisted, entertaining waiting room material.

Indian Legends of the Pacific Northwest
by Ella E. Clark
This one's a 1953 collection of tales from Native American tribes of Washington and Oregon, gathered from historical documents and interviews with Native elders. The book does have a white-centric feel to it that I don't think you'd get with a 21st collection of these tales. Or maybe I was just projecting that. Either way, the important thing is the stories themselves. They are very enjoyable and well recounted.

Bloodline
by Claudia Gray
In the debate between Star Wars and Star Trek, I'm definitely a Trekker. While I enjoyed the original trilogy, I never really got into Star Wars fandom or it's expanded universe. In fact, in the 43 years since the original came out, I've only read one other Star Wars novel. Bloodline is set about six years before the film The Force Awakens It's a tale of political conflict in the New Republic as experienced by Senator Leia Organa. The Empire was defeated years ago, but the next generation seems to have forgotten the lessons of history. But there's also some adventure. Princess Leia, of course, is not going to grow old and boring. The book kind of serves as a prequel to The Force Awakens, but I enjoyed it more as a stand alone book and didn't think too much about continuity.

Aylee
Book 17 of the Sluggy Freelance collection. The bulk of this collection deals with Torg and Aylee's jaunt in another dimension where the earth has been taken over by hordes of ghouls. There's also strips dealing with zombies on this earth, as well as developments in the evil HeretiCorp. This collection's not as laugh-out-loud-funny as some of the previous books, but it's still good stuff.
