Buried in Treasures

by David F. Tolin, Randy O. Frost, and Gail Steketee

This is another book I read for work. It looks at the concept of "Hoarding Disorder"--the state where one's habits of acquiring and keeping possessions begins to interfere with daily life. After covering some motivations why a person might either acquire or hang on to too much stuff, the authors offer some strategies to try and overcome the problem of hoarding. It's a self help book, geared towards someone who is working out the problem on their own. Now and then they offer some tips to family members or help professionals who might be working with someone who has a hoarding disorder. The best part of the book for me was when I used their assessment tool to determine that I do not have a hoarding disorder, despite the appearance of my desk at home. But I do think it was worth checking out for anyone who is interested in the concept.

Motivational Interviewing

by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick

So this was the book I was looking to read for my new position. I'm glad I read Finding Your Way to Change first, because that was written for regular folks and served to put the basic concept of Motivational Interviewing into my head. This book is written for professionals--folks who actually know what they're doing. But the book was clear enough for this under-educated dude to follow along.

Motivational Interviewing is a way of doing counseling--a mindset as much as a technique. Drs. Miller and Rollnick describe it as a dance, where counselor and client work together to help the client achieve their goal. Simply put, it involves engaging the client in working out their own issue. The counselor would then help the client focus on specific goals, encouraging them to decide and then plan to make the changes they need to achieve those goals. The book came across as a very comprehensive explanation of MI and a guidebook for using it. Of course, my opinions as a newbie don't carry much weight, but considering that this was the third edition of the book, I feel confident in recommending it to folks who are interested in this sort of thing. I, myself, am strongly considering getting a copy to put on my shelf. (And then hope I don't get fired a week later.)

Broken

by Pete Abrams

In this Sluggy Freelance collection, Torg and Riff's search for information on Oasis puts them on a collision course with Dr. Schlock and the evil Hereti-Corp. It leads up to a significant change in the strip. (And I don't mean the introduction of Zombie Head on a Stick.)

It's on my shelf!

Finding Your Way to Change

by Allan Zuckoff with Bonnie Gorscak

I grabbed this book from the library because I wanted to read up on Motivational Interviewing for my new job. It isn't so much a book about MI, but rather a book that uses MI to help the reader make changes in their life. Once I figured that out I decided to finish reading it to see what MI looked like in action. The book is set up in three sections. The first covers the concept that you don't have to change and trying to pressure yourself to make changes you don't want to make is self-defeating. The second section explores the reasons for making a change and your own confidence in making that happen. The third talks about actually making, executing, and evaluating plans for change. Through the book, Doctors Zuckoff and Gorscak follow five different characters through the process. The reader is presented with the characters' answers to various exercises and then invited to work the process themselves. (I declined, since I didn't want to take the extra time to analyze myself.)(It may be my loss, but the next book on MI will be on the library's hold shelf before I know it.) All in all, it seemed like a book worth checking out. It was easy to read and my B.S. detector didn't go off while I was reading.
