The Second War of the Worlds
by George H. Smith
I think this is a sequel, because it keeps referring to events the characters experienced in the "Goggish War," but the book has no reference at all to another book by George H. Smith. Go figure. Anyway, the story concerns an alternate Earth called Annwn, where magic and 19th century technology coexist. The Martians from H.G. Wells' classic War of the Worlds are making a second attempt, this time on Annwn. They have some help from some unscrupulous folk from Earth. But the Annwn hero, Dylan MacBride, has help from Earth, too -- a certain Victorian detective who has to run around nameless lest Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle's estate sic the lawyers on them. Of course, the people of Annwn have their own resources as well, especially MacBride's fiancé, Clarinda MacTague. The tale does not live up to the original War of the Worlds nor the original tales of a certain detective, but it's good enough as waiting room material.
