Bloom County: The Complete Library, Volume One

by Berkeley Breathed

Back in the day, Bloom County was one of the strips that I enjoyed on those occasions when I read a newspaper. I liked it enough that I even bought a couple of collections, which I read even more infrequently over the years. Lately they had been gathering dust when my daughters happened to pull them off the shelf and gave them a read. The next thing I know, Bunnah, my youngest, is struggling home with four of the the five volume collection. So this past week has been a family vacation to the 1980s and Bloom County, USA.

Reading through the collection, I was a bit surprised how different the first strips were compared to the days of Opus, Bill the Cat and the like. It would have been interesting to see those early characters developed more, but like Mr. Breathed himself says, the center of the strip was found in Opus and the funniest strips feature those later characters. Reading the collection is also a trip through the 1980s, with the numerous cultural references annotated in the margins. All in all the book is a very good collection of a good comic strip.

Be like my kinder and check it out.
