Turn the Ship Around!

Having started a new career that involves dealing more with people than recalcitrant computers, I figured I should find a book with tips on working with people. A friend recommended this book, subtitled "A true story of turning followers into leaders." Capt. Marquet tells the story of how he took command of the submarine USS Santa Fe and introduced a new style of management that transformed the ship's crew into one of the best in the Navy. He splits the tale into sections that illustrate the principles they used. Many people in authority have praised the book for the insights Capt. Marquet shares. Me, I haven't much authority. I just want to find the happy medium between being a nag and a doormat. So I found the story of how a submarine operates much more interesting than the leadership principles it was trying to teach. However, I may have inadvertently picked up a few tips on how to be a better employee. So if management is your thing, check this one out. There are worse things to read.
